Put private maintenance instructions next to the exact page, post or custom content that your client needs to update.

== Description ==

The page says "Contact us", but the phone number actually comes from a different settings screen. A shared banner needs a particular image size. A client remembers the last handover call differently.

Jeet Handover Notes gives each page its own small set of instructions inside the WordPress editor. An administrator writes the instructions; permitted editors read them while they work.

* A heading and plain-text instructions, separate from the page content.
* A temporary checklist for the current editing session.
* An optional example screenshot from the Media Library.
* Up to eight labeled shortcuts to this site's wp-admin screens.
* A searchable instruction index at Tools > Handover notes, with a content-type filter.
* Settings for reader roles and supported content types.
* Compatible native metabox for the block editor and classic editor.
* Save instructions without publishing or updating the page content.
* A stale-edit check prevents one open editor from silently replacing newer instructions.

All features are included. No signup, advertising, paid upgrade, external service, tracking or visitor-facing credit. Assets load only on the plugin's admin screens and the relevant editors.

== Installation ==

1. Upload the `jeet-handover-notes` folder to `/wp-content/plugins/`, or use Plugins > Add New > Upload Plugin with the installable ZIP.
2. Activate Jeet Handover Notes.
3. Open Settings > Handover notes to choose content types and reader roles.
4. Edit a page or post as an administrator and open "Page handover notes".
5. Add the instructions and click "Save instructions". The standard Update/Publish button also saves them.

In newer block editors, open the "Meta Boxes" bar at the bottom of the editor first, then "Page handover notes". In the classic editor the instructions appear as a normal metabox.

== Frequently Asked Questions ==

= Who can write or read the instructions? =

Users with `manage_options` can maintain instructions, and must also be allowed to edit the individual page. Other selected roles can read instructions only for pages they can already edit. Editors and Authors are selected by default. Roles and existing WordPress capabilities are never changed.

= Are the instructions public? =

The text is stored as protected post metadata and is not registered in the REST API, added to page content, or printed on the public site. Site administrators and database/backup operators can access stored data. It is for operational instructions, not passwords or secrets.

= Is the optional screenshot private too? =

No. WordPress Media Library files normally have public URLs. Use a demo screenshot with no confidential information. This plugin does not add protection to uploaded files.

= Does clicking a shortcut grant extra access? =

No. The destination still checks the user's normal WordPress permissions. Only HTTP(S) links inside the same site's wp-admin area are accepted. External links and traversal paths are discarded.

= Do checklist ticks stay checked? =

No. They are a temporary aid for the current session, not a record of task completion. They reset on reload.

= What does search cover? =

The instruction heading, body and checklist text. The content-type filter narrows the index. Results never include notes for content the current user cannot edit. The index checks up to 50 stored notes per page; permission filtering can leave a shorter page.

= Are notes included in post revisions or exports? =

They are separate from post content and are not restored by post revisions. A WordPress/database backup includes the metadata. A WordPress content export may include post metadata, so check exports before sharing them.

= What happens if I disable a content type or delete the plugin? =

Disabling a content type or the plugin hides its instructions without deleting them. Deleting plugin files also retains notes and settings to avoid losing the handover. To remove a note, clear its fields and save instructions before deletion. For complete cleanup, an administrator can remove the exact `_jeet_hn_note` and `_jeet_hn_search` post-meta keys and the `jeet_hn_settings` option using a database maintenance tool.

= Can this support custom post types? =

Yes. Content types with a native WordPress edit screen appear in settings. Internal reusable blocks, templates, navigation records and attachments are excluded. Compatibility with every third-party custom editor is not promised.

== Privacy ==

The plugin sends no data to an external service and uses no cookies of its own. It stores each instruction's text, optional attachment ID, admin shortcuts, last update time and the administrator's user ID in the site's database. Selected reader roles and content types are stored as an option. No front-end output is added.
